Kukio engagement photography session

Ashley and Dave chose Kuki’o Beach, a beautiful white-sand beach just north of Kona, as the location for their Big Island engagement photo session.  Kukio is accessed at the Hualalai Four Seasons Resort.

I often spot Hawaiian Green Sea Turtles (Honu) resting on the sand along the beach, especially at sunset time. I love incorporating them into my shots!

Outrigger Kona engagement, Liza & Jon

John and Liza met in California 5 years ago, Liza had just moved from the east coast and was starting college. She noticed John in one of her classes but never spoke to him, a week later she started a new job at a restaurant and he happened to already work there. After a year of inseparable friendship and getting him to skip his last class of the day to hangout with her, they started dating. Their first date he took her to the symphony. This past August her surprised her with tickets to Hawaii for her birthday, since she had never been to Hawaii; this was going to be an unforgettable trip. They’ve known since their first year of dating that they wanted to get married, yet were never in a rush. Good things come to those who wait, so they say. John and Liza agree that their engagement came at the perfect time in their lives and they couldn’t be happier. John is Liza’s best friend and truly her soul mate. He proposed after dinner by the ocean, at the Outrigger Kona Resort & Spa it was quiet and intimate just as she had always imagined. They laughed and cried, and of coarse she loved her ring! Liza says she is so thankful for John’s love and friendship. Their wedding date is August 29, 2015 in Rhode Island. They’re counting down to their next adventure!Kona, Sheraton, Engagement, Hawaii, Big Island

Sheri & Phil…engaged! Kailua-Kona, Big Island, Hawaii

Hello everyone! It’s been awhile since I’ve blogged! I really do wish that I could blog more quickly and more often but we have been a little overwhelmed with not just the busy season, but with life in general… I’m glad that for the rest of this month and January, we’ll stay put in Kona! I’m finally getting a little breather and hopefully I’ll be blogging a lot more in the coming weeks.

Right now I’m so excited to be sharing with you our latest engagement session with Sheri and Phil! Sheri and Phil are a dream to work with because 1. they are gorgeous, 2. they are amazing in front of the camera and 3. they are just so much fun to hang out with! We had a session just north of Kailua-Kona in an old lava field on the side of the highway, I just love how the yellow grass seems to glow at sunset.

Heather and Ryan, engagement, Four Seasons Hualalai, Big Island of Hawaii

Cute couple. Cute locations. Vintage car. Epic sunset.  BINGO! You’ve got a killer recipe for a fun engagement session! I met Jennifer & Ryan at the Four Seasons Hualalai for their engagement session and we decided to use some of the props available to us on the property, like the 1953 Buick Super Riviera Coupe Sampan (an open passenger transport vehicle typical to the Hawaiian islands, complete with a thatch covering on its roof. Kind of like a mobile Tiki hut), and an outrigger canoe that we found on the beach. Aside from a little flirtation with the possibility of getting a serious foot injury from landing on a sharp piece of coral during a sunset jump, I think that we all agreed that the session was a lot of fun. Enjoy!

Shawn and Dani, engagement, old Kona Airport, Big Island of Hawaii

Shawn and Dani were a fun couple to photograph, I had a great time at the beach with them. Instantly I felt like I were hanging out with two good friends. To those who already know Shawn, you likely already know he’s a pretty fun-loving guy. He definitely has a humorous side to his personality and additionally he’s absolutely in love with his stunning fiancé Dani. Dani’s incredibly sweet, and as you can see a gorgeous blonde beauty. As a couple together, there’s a lot of chemistry and they are a perfect match for each other.

For Shawn and Dani’s engagement session, we decided on Old Kona Airport State Park. While out on the couple’s session, we were all laughing nearly the entire time. Especially because of Shawn’s welcoming and inviting sense of humor. Thanks Shawn for keeping the photographer laughing, and for keeping Dani smiling. Shawn and Dani were down for just about anything like walking through the long grass and mesquite trees behind the beach area and hiking and climbing all over the lava rock that Big Island is known for. As always, we had a great time and captured a variety of photo styles and unique engagement pictures.

Shawn actually proposed to Dani the day before our session, at Kulaniapia Falls, a private waterfall located on the grounds of the Inn at Kulaniapia Falls, which includes 22 lush, tropical acres with waterfalls, Bamboo Garden, Hiking Trails and vistas of unrivaled pristine beauty. Kulaniapia Falls is just north of Hilo, Hawaii, on the Hamakua Coast.  Dani though Shawn was just setting his camera up for a picture, but as she approached, he got down on one knee, held out his hand which was holding a ring box and popped the question! Dani said yes before even looking a the ring…..and the ring is amazing, the diamond has been in Shawn’s family since the 1920’s, it belonged to his great great aunt!

Jeannie and Derek, engagement, Kikaua Point Beach, Big Island of Hawaii

I was so excited to do Jeannie and Derek’s firefighter themed engagement session! We met up yesterday at Kikaua Point Beach just north of the Kona Airport on the Big Island and just played, really.  Derek is a volunteer firefighter for the Hawaii Fire Department, Company 7 Bravo, so, we were able to also get some fun photos with him wearing his gear – a first for me and a great opportunity to try some new ideas. I had a great time spending the evening with these two and can’t wait for the wedding in July!

Natalie and Andrew, Kikaua Point Beach, Big Island Hawaii

Engagement photography is one of my favorites. Andrew proposed to Natalie at Christmas, they had agreed not to exchange stockings this year, but he gave one to her after all, with a diamond ring inside! I love capturing love. Thank you Natalie and Andrew for choosing me to capture your sweet relationship…I was honored!

Caroline and Scott, Kikaua Point Beach Park, Big Island Hawaii

Caroline and Scott were introduced through friends, it was Scott’s birthday party and Caroline had baked the cake, her first cake ever!  Sweet! That was 2009, and now, they are getting married. I was so happy when they decided to do an engagement session to get a little practice in front of the lens before the big day, I LOVE it when my couples do engagement sessions, always so much fun!  This session took place at Kikaua Point Beach Park, one of my very favorite places on this Big Island. Caroline and Scott, you are an amazing couple and I’m so excited to be capturing your wedding on Sunday! I hope you enjoy your sneak peek!

Laura and Evan, Puako beach, Big Island of Hawaii

Laura and Evan met at a wedding 5 years ago, then crossed paths again 1 ½ years later. They  always joke that they know they will last forever because they did things backwards…. they fell in love, broke up, then fell back in love. They had a magical Hawaiian wedding and are now living their happily ever after! Their love story has been a roller coaster but it is their amazing love that has helped them make it through some very tough challenges. They are best friends and their love still amazes them every day! They wouldn’t change their story one bit because they have a level of respect and love for one another that they would never have had otherwise, and two of the cutest children you could ever ask for!

In the most dramatic entrance I’ve seen, Laura surprised Evan by arriving to her wedding in a double hull canoe, launched from the Puako boat ramp by Captain Kiko. It was breathtakingly beautiful!

The reception took place at an amazing  Mauna Kea Resort vacation home . Their gorgeous beach themed cake was made by one of my favorite bakeries, Pineapple bakery…I adore Robin’s creations! Robin her staff at Sam’s Place also catered the event .

Laura is a photographer herself, so knowing how important photography is to her, I felt honored to be chosen as her wedding photographer.

Laura and Evan…you’re the best! Thank you for welcoming me like an old friend and allowing me to capture your love. And your friends. And your family. And everything in between! Your wedding was amazing and I was honored to be a small part of the day you married your best friend.  Much Love and Appreciation… Karen
